hydeordie:I saw Matthew Barney’s River of Fundament this…

I saw Matthew Barney’s River of Fundament this weekend, the entire 6 hours, and while I’m still processing what I saw here is an overview of relevant and not so relevant thoughts to it:

  • I can’t wait to see the show at MOCA this fall that corresponds with this film. It was so layered, that one viewing isn’t enough to catch all the details. I’m really looking forward to spending a lot of time with all the corresponding work to support and expand what I’ve seen.
  • What would a MOCA Gala by Barney look like? Talk about an all immersive experience, which could be transcendent but…maybe not great for donors in a post Abramovic Gala  world?
  • I’m grateful that *Smellovision* never caught on.
  • I would say a solid 35% of the audience made it to the end.
  • The sound was glorious. GLORIOUS!
  • There were some color correction/angle choices that I wasn’t into, but I’m sure there is a reason behind it and I’m just reacting from my own personal preferences. Maybe I’ve just spent too much time with directors with whom these things are really a visual priority. This isn’t to say I wouldn’t be able to find 1,000 stills that I would print out large-format and hang them on my walls and live with forever. Just a few scenes where those choices took me out of the narrative because the rest was hyper-beautiful.
  • Still have very little idea of what I saw and I’m into it.
  • Fully feel like I accomplished something major by staying through the entire thing.
  • Speaking of the MOCA show, what if they just showed the film on repeat a la The Clock during the show? What kind of people are showing up at 4am to see this?
