Twenty years ago, when I covered Bill Viola as the American representative in the Venice Biennale, I wrote that he—along with a few other artists—had turned video into art’s most promising medium. A little late in the day to commend video per se as a new art form (Nam June Paik started the revolution with a bulky Portapak in the mid-’60s), but the praise was intended for the advent of high-definition, full-color video projected at great size. Since then, Mr. Viola (b. 1951) has only gotten more technically and visually proficient. His videos are stunning in their clarity and scale.
